Silent Snow comprises a body of work produced by Elizabeth Sanjuan over four multi-week visits to Hokkaido, Japan in the dead of winter. Her images evoke a subtle symbolism and depth. The trees of Hokkaido show a deep resolve and resilience, whether forced to survive on their own, or amongst a grove. As Elizabeth turns inwards and reflects on her own life journey of six decades, she finds that she is enveloped in a certain quietude and peacefulness when photographing these scenes. Whilst there is solace in community, there is unyielding strength in solitude. The importance of understanding the life of trees is knowing that one can survive a solitary life, but our growth may also be enriched by finding the right community. Her photographs seek to capture that duality. Elizabeth would like viewers to pause, feel, and reflect on the lessons that trees have for each of us.
